While valve open, the holes in the ball keep the line of the inlet body allowing the fluid flow. When the valve is cloesed the port takes a perpendicular direction and stops the fluid flow. That happens because the sphere –the ball– in the valve consists of a port that adapts according to the position of the valve.

In this type of ball valve, the sphere –the ball– is sospended in the flowing fluid and keps its position thanks to the compression of two elastomeric seats against it. The shaft is connected to the top of the ball and allows the switch from an open to a closed position with a 90 degrees turn movement. When the shaft is moved the ball receives a load and gets pressed against its seats.

The ball –the inside element– fits within the valve and has a smaller hole than the pipe or tube that it is connected to: it therefore produces a pressure drop due to the flow restriction.
